Since 1989, the Pain Management Program has been endorsed by the Stress Reduction and Relaxation Program at University of Massachusetts Medical Hospital, under the direction of Jon Kabat-Zinn, Ph.D.
This meditation-based program, run by Ralph Steele and Sabina Schulze, emphasizes concepts and techniques that further the understanding and management of pain through the application of mindfulness to everyday life. People suffering from myofascial pain, T.M.J., heart disease, back pain, chronic headaches, AIDS, neurological disorders and cancer have benefited from this approach.
This treatment approach is individually designed for each person and is designed to help clients understand their pain and how they relate to it. Patients are often able to decrease pain medication intake and in some cases, discontinue medication intake completely. This method offers insight into the process of healing, teaching how much one can do in every moment to help healing to occur.
